Selva Val Gardena

Highlights

  • Part of the Dolomiti Superski, the largest ski area in Europe.
  • Spectacular scenery, dotted with traditional mountain huts.
  • Modern and efficient lift system, and excellent snowmaking.

The Val Gardena resorts of Selva and Ortisei have direct access to the extensive Dolomiti Superski area – the largest ski area in Europe. It’s home to the UNESCO-protected Sella Massif – arguably the most beautiful mountain range in Europe – whose pink and jagged peaks created the Dolomites’ famous ski circuit, the Sella Ronda. Selva is ideal for intermediate skiers, who are spoilt for choice by the range of open and wooded red runs. And just 5km away are the sunny, open bowls of Ortisei – great for beginners and less confident intermediates.

Selva’s groomed slopes host the FIS Ski World Cup races where thousands of the world’s best skiers have competed, racing up to speeds of 105mph. The races take place on the legendary Saslong slope in the shadow of the mountain peak and have been an important event in the area since the 1970s.

The traditional roadside town is part of the Süd Tyrol region. Once part of Austria, you will find a lot of similarities in this resort to its neighbouring country including the language and its après scene. The town has an excellent range of après bars such as La Stua and Bar Saltos where staff wear traditional South Tyrolean dress and serve local drinks – try a refreshing Tyrolean Radler or a warming Italian Bombardino.

Ski Information

Beginners
Excellent spacious slopes can be found by the village nursery slopes below Dantercëpies Gondola. The local ski school will get you progressing to plenty more slopes in no time.

Intermediates
The blue runs in Plan de Gralba and the Alpe di Siusi above Ortisei are great for building your confidence. Head to the areas around Mont de Seura, above Monte Pana, and Dantercëpies which both have great red and black runs to explore.

Advanced
Head for the long reds from Dantercrëpies to keep you busy, or the Val Gardena World Cup piste, the Saslong, for a challenge. It’s open to the public most of the time and kept in excellent condition.

Glacier skiing
Selva has good links to the Marmolada Glacier with its fantastic intermediate and expert runs, some starting at an incredible height of 3,200m above sea level. There are also great off-pisting opportunities and an ideal heli-skiing destination. The glacier is the only one in the Dolomites section of the Alps and part of the highest mountain in the region.

Ski away-days
Rack up your mileage with a Ski Away-day to the Hidden Valley, a ski area in the Dolomites. The coach will drop you off in the morning where you will then have the chance to witness one of the most famous ski routes in the world, ski past a beautiful frozen waterfall and travel across the Faltzarego pass, the Cinque Torri and the Lagazuoi Mountain. With your Area lift pass, you get 1 free day to experience this unique and stunning setting. Speak to your rep for more details.
