Skiing in Fernie
"Steep and deep" Fernie attracts mainly advanced skiiers and borders who thrive on the challenging terrain. Experts will love this mountain which offers unbelievable variety in terrain (glades, steeps, powder, bumps) which you can happily explore for days. From the Timber Bowl and Great Bear lifts you can access a number of challenging runs in the Cedar Bowl, Lizard Bowl, Currie Bowl and Timber Bowl areas, all of which are complemented by stunning views. 'First tracks' excursions are a popular choice - You will be picked up at the crack of dawn and taken up to the mountain by skidoo so you can create the first tracks of the day before the lifts even open.
Extreme skiiers and boarders will love the selection of parks. However, the parks are not just for experts. They are all rated by ability and one park in particular was aimed at beginners with low level jumps and rails.
The ski school offers a high standard of tuition. Private lessons are also available for groups or individuals and this is worthwhile if you want to brush up your technique - the skiing/boarding ability of the intructors is very high, so even advanced skiiers/riders would benefit.
Fernie is located around 2 hours away from Kimberley Mountain Resort. Both resorts are owned by the same company, RCR (Resorts of the Canadian Rockies). So you can use your lift pass in both resorts. Most tour operators offer day-trips to Kimberley which is more geared towards intermediates than Fernie but does still offer sufficient black runs.
Non Skiing Activities in Fernie
Aside from the skiing, Fernie Ghostriders is Fernies local Ice Hockey team and it is recommended that you catch a game to get a real taste of just how passionate the Canadians are about their national sport. Every visitor to Fernie should make sure they visit historical Fernie which you will find on 2nd Avenue. This is the pretty part of down-town Fernie and it is the only place you will find good shopping.
