At just over 2,000m, the highest resort in the popular Milky Way ski circuit
Sestriere was built in 1930 by Giovanni Agnelli for the recreational pleasure of workers at his Fiat factory in Turin. It is high and snow-sure, while below the tree-line slopes have been cut through larch forests between 200 and 300 years old. It was here that Alberto Tomba dominated World Cup slalom races in the late 80s and throughout the 90s. Sestriere is linked with the vast Milky Way (Via Lattea) resorts of Sauze d’Oulx, Sansicario, Cesana and Claviere – 275 miles of skiing all told. And there’s even night skiing too, if you still have the energy!
The resort was at the very heart of the downhill events of the Turin Winter Games when the already extensive lift system was further improved, with new uphill capacity in Sestriere, Sauze and Sansicario. The ski pass now includes one day’s skiing in Montgenèvre, France.
