Kronplatz (San Vigilio)

"A well-kept ski secret of speedy gondolas and long, scenic runs for all abilities.

  • Long, scenic runs for all abilities, with great snowmaking and grooming.
  • Speedy lifts to the slopes, which are generally quiet.
  • Access to the 1,200km of slopes on the Dolomiti Superski area.

Considered by some to be Europe's best-kept ski secret, the area of Kronplatz offers world-class skiing for all abilities, with links to the wider Sella Ronda and Dolomiti Superski areas. It’s made up of small villages and towns that surround the ski area’s 'panetonne', shaped exactly as it’s named. The area is extremely well kept and has no fewer than 20 gondolas to whisk you up the mountain. The village of San Vigilio is fairly quiet, with a few shops and some excellent restaurants and just one après bar, all set around a picturesque church. However, you can get the ski bus to nearby Riscone and a taxi back for a livelier night out.

On the other side of the 'panetonne' to San Vigilio, are two long black runs going all the way from the top to the very bottom and are used by the world cup team to train. The rest of the sides are made up of blue and red runs. Beginners are best to use the Miara mountain side on the other side of the town – however, this is the sunny side of San Vigilio and runs can become more difficult than marked.

New for 2017 is the brand new Hinterberg run that starts from the top of Kronplatz and weaves its way 2.9km down the mountain to the base station for the Marchner gondola. And dropping a whopping 700m in altitude, it's bound to take you on a wild ride.

Ski information

The local area has some ideal ski areas for beginners. On the other side of the town to the 'pannetone' is the Miara ski area where runs tend to be more for beginners - however, this is the sunny side of the mountain and so they can sometimes become a little more difficult. There are plenty of opportunities for nervous beginners to get a lift back down again should they wish. From the top of the 'pannetone' there are a number of blue runs - however, it is not possible to ski blue runs from the top to the bottom as the middle run to San Vigilio is red.

Kronplatz and the Dolomiti Superski area is an intermediates paradise. The local area has plenty of red runs to choose from at the top of the 'pannetone' and you can ski from the top to the bottom to San Vigilio on red runs. Two hours from San Vigilio, skiing the connecting runs and using the ski bus is the Dolomite's Sella Ronda - an ideal area for intermediates with a clockwise and anticlockwise circuit made up of mainly red runs and some more challenging runs if you are feeling more adventurous.

On the north-facing Riscone side of the 'pannetone' is where the World Cup Team train. There are two black runs that go from the top of the 'pannetone' to the bottom with a great restaurant half way down.

Cross-country skiing
The cross-country trails in Kronplatz are located in several beautiful settings and range from comfortable and flat to athletic and challenging - all with extra room for skaters. Trails can be found along the valleys, on the mountains at 2,000m and through the fairytale-like woods, so you'll never run out of things to look at.
