Hotels in Sestriere don’t get more central than the Du Col, sitting in pride of place at the very centre of the village. A stay here means first dibs on the slopes each morning and doorstep access to the Milky Way’s 400km of piste. It’s got a really friendly vibe throughout and has a cosy lounge with panoramic mountain views. "Skiing for all abilities, a great snow record and the scenic Milky Way...."
- A high-altitude resort with excellent snowmaking.
- Great skiing with plenty of local slopes for all abilities.
- Easy access to Sauze d'Oulx next door and to the wider Milky Way ski area.
Sestriere is renowned for its great conditions: it's high up, faces north-west and has extensive snow-making equipment. There are lots of open runs on the local slopes, plus some off-piste among a handful of tree-lined slopes.
Head out to the Milky Way ski area and you’ll get 400km of piste that’ll take you to Sauze d’Oulx, Claviere and to Mongenèvre in France. Sestriere village is quieter than neighbouring Sauze d’Oulx, but there’s still a good choice of bars if you fancy a few drinks after a day on the mountain.
The village was the first purpose-built resort in the Italian Alps, improved in 2006 by the Winter Olympics being held there. For something special off the slopes, try your skating skills on the open-air ice rink with views of the mountains.
Ski two countries
From Sestriere, you can easily access the Milky Way resorts of Sauze d'Oulx and Sansicario and, eventually, Claviere and then Montgenèvre, in France. With your lift pass you can head over the French-Italian border for one day during your holiday to enjoy the longest sledge run in France, the Luge Monty Express, loads of powdery runs and 2 border cross tracks, ideal for snowboarders and freestylers.
Most of the beginners slopes fan out in an arc from the ski school meeting place in the centre of Sestriere with easy runs from the two baby lifts and the Jolly. To the right of the area are two further drag lifts, ideal for first timers.
Sestriere is an intermediate's paradise. The skiing is on two main areas, Banchetta and Sises, offering plenty of choice from short mogul fields to long wide runs for cruising. An added bonus to the 21 lifts in the immediate Sestriere area is the amazing number of runs on the extensive Milky Way.
The huge bowl of the Amfiteatro offers excellent skiing and the black runs at the top of Motta and Sises provide the expert with plenty of skiing. The famous Kandahar Slalom and Kandahar Banchetta runs are used in World Championship races.
Rack up your mileage with a Ski Away-day to Montgenèvre. Just a 45-minute bus ride away from Sestriere, you’ll be on the slopes in time for first lifts, be able to practise your techniques on wide, cruising greens and play around in the Milky Way’s biggest snow park. With your local 6-day lift pass, you get 1 free day to let loose on the fabulous Montgenèvre mountains to slide, carve or freestyle to your heart’s content. Speak to your rep for more details.
From steep couloirs to open bowls, Sestriere is a haven for off-piste opportunities. The Monginevro Pass has a lot of easily accessible bowls from the lifts or with a short hike on skins. One of the most beautiful descents, down Pitre de l'Aigle, requires just under an hour's walk, but it's worth it. The route down to Pragelato involves a lovely open bowl at the beginning followed by some exciting lines through a larch forest.
